Moulton started his musical journey on piano at a young age but developed a more defined interest in drums and percussion in his early teens. At age 19 Z Moulton was studying at Goulburn Conservatory of Music when he met S.Leahy (guitarist) who shared his musical passion and dream. The two co-wrote their first album “High Spending Gambler” while performing under the name of “Shluttballs” with fellow students Giles and Smyth.
The band underwent a name change to Vitamin Z after it was believed to be the cause of a second place win in a local battle of the bands comp. The official release/launch of Vitamin Z’s album “High Spending Gambler” coincided with opening for “Pool Grind 2000”, a festival to celebrate Youth Art and Culture in rural NSW. Vocals - Moulton, Guitar - Leahy, Bass - Smyth, Drums - Giles.
Vitamin Z is best described as a 70’s style rock band with a slightly cock-rock attitude. Since its release “High Spending Gambler” has sold over 10,000 copies online and in-store.
Vitamin Z’s album “High Spending Gambler” is available on itunes.
In early 2000 Vitamin Z had two singles released on the “Cluster Y2K Collaboration Album”.
Mid 2000 Moulton & Leahy went on to form a new band in the heart of Sydney City. This band was called “Ten Gorgeous Girls”, once again hosting Moulton as the lead singer and Leahy on Guitar. Unfortunately TGG never succeeded mostly due to the audience disappointment of finding four scruffy musos at the pub rather than the advertised ‘Ten Gorgeous Girls”. Eventually ‘The Chicken Brothers’ - the rhythm section - were replaced in conjunction with a name change for the band to Piglatron.
Piglatron was a heavy funk rock outfit that successfully toured the Sydney circuit gigging usually 2 and sometimes 3 nights a week from 2001 to 2003. The new rhythm section included Foxworthy on Bass and ‘Short Neck’ on Drums. The intense live show was always a sell out to capacity crowds and Piglatron headlined every gig after it’s historic first. Piglatron were known as a bizarre act that included ‘prosthetic’ pigs and an occasional rubber chicken as part of their live act as well as promoting it’s lost mascot ‘Piglatron - the lost dog’. Piglatron also recorded the Album “Bring Home The Bacon” with Foxworthy playing Guitar and Bass. You can now listen to this album by clicking here. Notably Foxworthing, Piglatron’s Bass Player played an equal share to the musical journey and development of the band. Vocals - Moulton, Guitar - S. Leahy, Bass - Foxworthington, Drums - Short Neck. Late 2003 saw the release of Z’s first Solo Album “Mainstream Pop Culture” which was a midi inspired album incorporating Z.Moulton orchestral compositions and percussive arrangements. This album also includes rare audio from ‘early Moulton recordings’. Mainstream Pop Culture has never been available to the public but music from that album has found it’s way into a few ZMoulton YouTube videos.
In 2006 Z had an album launch for his second solo album “Moulton - Time Line”. This album would combine all of Moulton’s skills giving examples of many genre and styles. Moulton plays many instruments in this album and includes a track or two from earlier bands he worked with.
This album also featured some never before heard tunes by the classic Moulton & Leahy combo.
In late 2006 Z went on a tour of Europe, personally handing out hundreds of copies of his album to people in the street.
Throughout 2007 and 2008 Z worked in the ‘mock-metal’ band known as Suetallica. Suetallica was a powerful metal driven band with a musical sense of humor. Suetallica’s live show was a spectacle in itself that indulged in audience participation and musical story telling. The members of Suetallica took on diverse character traits, each with unique musical roles and talents. Notably Suetallica won the State Campus Band Competition 2007 and also opened for the Macquarie University Conception Day that drew an audience of over 10k. Vocals - Moulton, Bass - Beanie Man, Axe - The Gimp, Stix - Luke.
In 2009 the Moulton & Leahy duo was at it again, this time releasing two singles under the Sgt. Popper Label. Sgt. Popper’s single “Gotta Getta Hit” is available on itunes and despite being targeted at the Tripple J audience it has not had much attention since it’s release. Sgt. Popper is not a real person.
Throughout 2010 to now Z has continued to compose and record original music as a solo artist and plans to release his next solo album in 2013. Z’s musical inspirations have always been drawn from life's observations as he pursues conceptional and creative continuity in all musical endeavors. Z prides himself on an original repertoire and a prolific recorded catalogue of over 500 studio mastered original musical works.
